Exercises in Technicolor
Ate instructional double-bound books, 2019
Anchored in an instructional anxiety of serving a college printshop as a assistant, I had this book sitting on my mind for a long time. The idea grew out of a series of color test prints made in 2023 with the intent of creating a studio handbook. Torn between the students’ proverbial lack of impatience shown in this discipline and the school’s over-aestheticized prograsm, advocating for a technical skill was a difficult space to be in. Over 200 color studies were made by combining just three linoleums of a simple geometrical design, but after the presses have cooled down, a number of prints were edited, laser cut, and heavily collaged. Many moons have gone since the time I had these didactic urges, and the job description changed. The double-bound book structures became a field of my interest. The iterability of this structure enables change and allows for constant re-contextualization and new readings of its split pages. The Exercises in Technicolor is a set of ate books meant to feed ones curiosity.
